I had a similar noise, metallic in nature, that was bugging me for the longest time. It also was engine speed/load specific and I thought it was coming from the engine. It turns out it was the chrome chain guard rattling against the engine side cover. I wedged a matchbook (no matches, of course!) between the chain guard and the side cover and the noise disappeared. Just a thought.:)
